CHAPTER 15

A PIRATE’S LIFE

Reeves flipped over the Mhorr’s dead body, wincing at the mess his own fingers had made of the Bukkan’s throat, and removed the man’s hand cannon. Despite its crude appearance, the weapon was exceptionally well-engineered and also incredibly powerful. The Bukkan were natural builders and engineers and it showed in the workmanship of their technology. Unfortunately, the majority of Bukkan that left their home colonies were also money-obsessed, immoral cut-throats, like the pirates Reeves and Kane had just killed. During his time in the Bastion Navy, Reeves had made a name for himself as the commander who put Bukkan pirate gangs out of business. Back then he was bound by the rules and regulations of the Bastion military; regulations that had often got in the way of doing the right thing. On Deep Six, there were no rules. On Deep Six, Reeves was free to deal with the pirates in the manner he saw fit, and it was an opportunity he intended to grab with both hands.

Suddenly, the sound of angry voices speaking in a Bukkan dialect filtered into the room. Plasma blasts quickly followed the words and Reeves rolled out of the line of fire, while Kane shot back and hustled into cover.

“I saw at least three pirates in the corridor,” said Kane, as Reeves moved into cover across the opposite side of the doorway. “But I’d put twenty credits on there being a lot more of them on the walkway outside.”

“I’ve learned not to bet against you, Katee,” said Reeves, while checking the Bukkan hand-cannon to make sure it was primed and ready to fire. “Are you okay to move out?” he added, recalling that his XO had been shot at close-range only moments earlier.

“I’ve got a couple of cracked ribs and a hell of a headache, but I’ll be fine,” replied Kane, shooting Reeves a reassuring smile.

“This time, you follow my lead,” said Reeves, holding the hand cannon ready. Kane may have been the master manipulator, but when it came to dealing out violence, Reeves was a virtuoso.

“I’ll be right behind you,” said Kane, managing to channel some of her usual brightness, despite clearly being in pain.

Reeves heard hushed Bukkan voices and the sound of boots dragging across the floor. He’d never met a Bukkan yet that could class themselves as stealthy, and whomever was approaching was doing a good job of upholding that stereotype. Slipping his finger onto the trigger of the cannon, Reeves confronted his heavy-footed attacker and opened fire. The Bukkan pistol boomed like an actual cannon, blasting the pirate back through the door as if he’d been hit by a rampaging bull. A panicked shot from a second pirate flashed wide, then Reeves squeezed the trigger again, exploding the Bukkan’s head and coating the walls of the corridor in gigantic splats of blood, brain and bones.

Advancing over the smoldering mass of flesh, Reeves saw a third pirate lying on the floor in the corridor. He assumed that the man had been bowled over by his companion, who Reeves had sent flying with his first shot.
